Tycho Brahe (14 December 1546 – 24 October 1601)
A renowned Danish astronomer who was the last of the major astronomers to work without the aid of a telescope, and is credited for having the most accurate observations of his time as well as discovering Mars. Perhaps more than his contributions to astronomy, he is known for is eccentric life.
In a duel against another Danish noble, he lost his nose, and throughout the rest of his life he would wear prosthetic noses of various metals and designs depending on the occasion.
Having been of noble birth, Brahe lived in a large estate, and kept with him a dwarf whom he believed to be clairvoyant, and a tamed pet moose. (Who needs a horse when you can have a moose?) Unfortunately, during the visit of another noble the moose drank too much beer and drunkenly fell down a flight of stairs to his demise.
Brahe died during a visit to Prague due to a kidney ailment that arose after refusing to use the toilet during a banquet out of politeness. It is suggested, however, that he had been poisoned with mercury during the banquet, though there are no released finds on it.
He wrote his own epitaph stating, “He lived like a sage and died like a fool.”
